Donor Policies
General Policies for Individual Donors
1. Donor Rights
- Donors have the right to be informed of the organization’s mission, financial status, and how their donations will be used.
- Regardless of the size or nature of their contribution, all donations are met with gratitude from SBNC.
2. Acceptance of Donations
- The organization accepts monetary donations, in-kind goods, and pro bono services that support its mission and comply with its policies.
- All donations are subject to review and approval by the organization to ensure alignment with its values and operational needs.
3. Acknowledgment and Receipts
- All donations will be acknowledged promptly, and with an official receipt for tax purposes, as applicable.
- In-kind contributions will be acknowledged with a description of the goods or services received, however, the donor is responsible for determining the fair market value for tax purposes.
4. Donor Confidentiality
- Donor information will be kept confidential and will not be shared, sold, or traded without explicit consent.
- Donors may choose to remain anonymous and such requests will be honored.
- Donors can opt out of recognition listings, newsletters, or solicitation communications at any time.
5. Use of Donations
- Donations will be used in accordance with the donor’s intent, if specified and accepted by the organization.
- Unrestricted donations will be used at the discretion of the organization to fulfill its mission and operational priorities.
6. In-Kind Donations
- The organization may only accept in-kind goods or services that are useful, safe, and meet its current programmatic or operational needs.
- All in-kind donations must be reviewed for condition, legality, and usability before acceptance.
7. Tax Compliance
- The organization will comply with all applicable IRS and local regulations related to charitable contributions.
- Donors are responsible for consulting with tax professionals regarding the deductibility of their contributions.
8. Conflict of Interest
- Donations that present a real or perceived conflict of interest will be evaluated and may be declined.
- The organization reserves the right to refuse gifts that could compromise its integrity, independence, or public image.
9. Refunds and Restrictions
- Donations are generally non-refundable.
- If a restricted gift cannot be used as intended, the donor will be contacted for alternative use approval or the funds may be returned.
